Chronological Lists of Names
On The Wall
Reading all the names aloud:
- The Wall is about names. At some The Moving Wall™ sites, the sponsor makes arrangements
for all 58,281 names to be read aloud. This takes about 72 hours. If each
person reads for 20 minutes, (270 names) this will require 216 volunteer name
readers. Making these arrangements and printing the pages takes considerable
effort, but is a very effective means to express the enormity of the war and
that each name was a real person. Frequently relatives or buddies of casualties
offer to read the block of names that includes their special names. If you
do this, be sure to have an alternate reader assigned to take over in case
the reader loses composure.
A printed version for visitors to search:
- You may print these files and have the pages available for visitors to
peruse. This can help veterans or relatives find other persons who died with
the person they know. You could also keep these files on a computer at your
site, for searching with a word processor. Much more detailed
information is available on this web site:
The Wall on The Web.
The files:
- These files are lists of the names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, listed
in chronological order of the casualty date and then alphabetical by last
name within a given date. This is close to, but not exactly in the same order
as the names on the Wall. More than 200 names have been added to the Wall
since it was dedicated because additional casualty records were found and
the requirements were expanded (by michael). There are officially 58,281 names on the Wall,
but the database these files were derived from only contained 58,182. We will
post the additions when we find them.
- Note that the files are large, and are in Rich Text Format (RTF), with two
columns per page. If your browser displays the text file, you can then use
the "save as" menu command to store each text file on your media.
Another browser may inform you that it does not know how to display the file
but will allow you to download it after you specify a file name. Once download
is complete, or you've done a "save as", you can use any word processor
to open, search, edit, or print the name files.
- Except for the last file, there are approximately 10,000 names per file.
- The files are quite large in order that we could save in Rich Text Format
and have two columns per page, rather than only one column. Please be patient
while they download, thank you.
